GA Teacher's Body Found 1 Month After Shoes, Wallet Discovered

On a cold February afternoon, a beloved Atlanta teacher and his fiancée set off for what should have been a joyful birthday boat ride. What followed was a heart-wrenching, multi-state search effort that captivated the public and left a community grieving — and searching for answers.
A Birthday Turns to Tragedy
On Feb. 8, 2025, Atlanta teacher Gary Jones and his fiancée Joycelyn Wilson, a Spelman College math instructor, launched a boat on Lake Oconee to celebrate his 50th birthday.
They never returned.
That evening, their unoccupied boat was found circling near the lake's dam. Jones' wallet and shoes were nearby. Wilson's body was discovered the next day. But Jones remained missing for nearly a month.
Search Efforts Stymied
Authorities from Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida joined the search alongside aviation units, dive teams, and sonar-equipped boats. Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills told PEOPLE, "I cannot remember such an extensive use of government and civilian personnel and resources for an incident such as this on Lakes Oconee and Sinclair in the last 40 years."
But frigid weather and the lake's treacherous underwater landscape — filled with submerged trees and timber — hampered efforts. The search was briefly suspended due to poor conditions.
The Tragic Truth Revealed
On March 9, 2025, nearly a month after the disappearance, a nonprofit recovery team from Wisconsin, Bruce's Legacy, joined the search effort. Founder Keith Cormican used high-powered side-scan sonar to locate Jones' body about 45 feet underwater and roughly 100 yards from where Wilson had been found. He said to 13WMAZ, "Being a reservoir, it's underwater you know, forest. That's always the, the worst area to try to search on with our heavy equipment."
What Happened That Day?
Investigators believe the couple likely drowned following a boating accident. Sills noted that the outboard motor's cover was off, suggesting mechanical trouble and that they may have fallen overboard while trying to fix it. In a statement reported by USA TODAY, he added, "This was a very small boat and inappropriate, a totally inappropriate boat for this type of lake."
Final autopsy and toxicology reports are pending.
Remembering the Victims
Jones, a teacher at Westminster Schools for over two decades, was widely loved by students and colleagues. Wilson was a respected educator. The couple had been planning to marry later that month.
In a statement to 13WMAZ, Jones' brother, Michael, said, "This has been probably one of the worst 29 days of our life, and we depended heavily on our faith. Our Heavenly Father brought us through. He's still sustaining us, and we have come to a new level of faith, of strength, and we just encourage everyone to continue to pray for us."
