A fun family outing turned into a living nightmare — and the footage went viral. On April 22, 2025, Rishi Bhatt was ziplining over Pahalgam's Baisaran meadow in Indian-administered Kashmir, recording his experience with a selfie stick.
What he captured instead was chilling — armed men storming the valley below, opening fire on unsuspecting tourists. Bhatt, at first unaware of the chaos, soon realized he was filming a massacre from above — a moment that's now at the center of international headlines and rising geopolitical tensions.
A Tourist's Brush With Death
Bhatt, a father from Ahmedabad, India, was midway through the zipline when the gunfire began. In the background of his cheerful video, people on the ground are seen fleeing as shots ring out. "After about 20 seconds, I realized that it was a terrorist attack and people on the ground are being killed. I saw 5-6 people getting shot," Bhatt told ANI News, according to PEOPLE.
He immediately fled with his wife and son once they reached the other end of the line, later hiding with others in a pit to avoid detection. His footage not only confirmed the scale of the violence but served as a visceral reminder of how suddenly joy can collapse into terror.
The Attack in the Valley
The mass shooting took place in the lush meadows of Pahalgam, a favorite destination for families and tourists. According to authorities, four armed militants opposed to India's control over Kashmir opened fire on tourists, killing 26 — 25 of them Indian citizens, and one Nepali, as reported by Edition.
Survivors said some victims were targeted after being asked about their religion. Others recounted how the gunmen accused them of supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Eyewitness accounts revealed that the attackers operated with chilling precision, shooting some of the men at close range.
The Fallout and Growing Fury
India quickly blamed the attack on Pakistan-based militants, suspending its participation in the Indus Waters Treaty — a long-standing water-sharing pact — and expelling Pakistani diplomats. Pakistan denied involvement, stating any attempt to redirect water from the treaty would be considered an act of war, according to Edition.
Two weeks later, India launched missile strikes on Pakistani territory, saying it hit suspected terrorist sites. Pakistan reported 31 dead and 57 injured, and vowed retaliation, further escalating tensions between the two nuclear-armed nations.
Lives Changed Forever
The victims of the massacre included fathers, grandfathers, and breadwinners — many of whom were on long-awaited vacations. Among them was Ramachandran Narayanamenon, 69, who had just retired and was traveling with his family. Another, Sanjay Lele, had planned the trip to lift his wife's spirits after a long battle with partial paralysis.
For these families, there is no going back to normal. Their loss is compounded by the fear that the tragedy may become a political flashpoint rather than a moment for healing.
The War No One Wants to See Again
Kashmir has long been a powder keg between India and Pakistan, having already fueled three wars since 1947. What makes this moment different is how visible and personal it has become — not through a government report or media statement, but through a tourist's accidental video, now seen around the world.
Analysts warn that political pressure in both capitals could lead to further escalation. And while most citizens in both countries likely hope for peace, the rhetoric — and the military maneuvers — suggest a different direction.
